PC Problems

Posted on | June 22, 2007 | 2 Comments

Well, it seems that I have my computer working again. This is a good thing.

Computer PartsMy Thermaltake PSU decided to die a few weeks ago (again). Being the 2nd problem with this model PSU I’ve had I decided to avoid Thermaltake again so opted for a OCZ StealthXstream 600W unit instead. Unfortunately, at the time, I wasn’t sure which part was the culprit so I also threw into the order an Asus M2N32 WS Pro mobo and an AM2 5600+ Athlon 64 Dual-Core Processor and 2GB of OCZ Platimum (rev2) 800Mhz RAM along with a 250GB Maxtor hard disk.

Initially it seemed like a good idea, considering my old setup wouldn’t boot. But I was in for a host of fun challenges: First off I couldn’t format the new hard disk to install Windows fresh – It seems you need Windows XP SP2 in order to format a disk over 137GB. So I finally ended up having to boot my old HD and use that to format the new one before I could install Windows on it. Then I had to acquire a copy of XP SP2 as my SP1 disk wouldn’t install on something over 137GB.

My computer - SparklyThen my biggest problem was getting the new rig stable. This took me almost 2 weeks. And to cut a long story short the RAM I was using was being fed 1.8v by the motherboard (set to Auto), and it needed 2.1v. So after an infuriating two weeks of random reboots and system crashes I eventually found my answer (god bless Google) and have been running problem free for some time now.

I’m currently reinstalling everything I need onto it, so those that have noticed that I have been emailing/facebooking/MSN’ing etc. less will be glad (maybe) to know that I am back and will continue my online life, and Counter Strike: Source, from now forward!

So thank you for following my latest geek post, and now I have a new rig set up I shall endeavor to post some more and detail some more of my turbulent life :-D
