New Phone!

Phone Photo showing MenuHello everybody, it’s been a while…

Well, I have a new phone. Nokia N80. After 6 years clinging onto my old BT Genie tariff (unlimited free text messages) I took the plunge of upgrading to a modern tariff, complete with GPRS, MMS, and all the technology advances I passed by with my out-of-date contract.

I’m now the proud owner of 750 ‘X-network’ anytime minutes, and 850 text messages each month. And, of course, then new phone.

I love this phone. It looks bulky and heavy, but it’s not that noticable and quite light at that. The downsides I’m finding are Battery life and the new Symbian 60v3 OS. Which is not backwards compatible with Symbian 60 apps. So none of the extras I packed my 7610 with are available (yet). Most notably Tom Tom Mobile. So the 7610 has been resigned to the car as a SatNav handset. Hopefully not for too long. Second downside: space. I had 750 photos to transfer from my 7610 (with 512MB Mini-MMC) and the phone came with a 128Meg card. Being me I decided to opt for an eBay special of a 2GB Mini-SD card for it. But my eBay curse strikes again. Card turns up, card not work. Bugger. So I’m surviving on 128MB until a working card arrives.

Obviously the first thing I did after transferring my details from the old phone was install ‘The Secret of Monkey Island‘ on the phone. Big up to the guys at SCUMMVM for the Symbian Port!

Aside from the obvious it’s a good little phone that’s bringing me into the new age. Picture messaging is new and exciting, but I’m afraid to send any as they’re 40p. GPRS is new and inventive, but I’m scared to use it as it costs per MB. The Wi-Fi is good though. I can sit next to my computer and surf the web on my phone… Perhaps that’ll be more fun when I’m in town at a wireless hotspot though? Or at least less pointless.

The main gripe I’ve found from the net is battery life. 1-2 days. But I was charging my old phone that much anyway, just to keep it full. So until i go on a long trip I think it’ll be fine. But I’ll live with it a few days and give you another review. Until then, Go Nokia!
