Deads Man’s Chest

Davey Jones from PotCWell, I saw it last night, Pirates of The Caribbean II; Dead Man’s Chest. A mouthful of a title for an eyeful of a film. Visually this film just jumps out at you. The reams of names in the credits under the effects titles will show you that a lot of time was spent mixing the CG effects with the video to something that worked 99% of the time. You were looking at Davey Jones and occasionally asking yourself if a facial tick was meant to be there, like Nighy’s tourettes-styled acting, or if it just wasn’t picked up on. It’s that good. And then at times, most notably in my memory is the part where the Kracken is taking down a ship, the CG effects just looked wrong. Not unreal, not fake, but just not done well enough to stop some warning flags coming up in your mind.

The one big let-down for me – and lets face it, this is really picking a fault with a great film – is the ending. They did a Matrix. This isn’t a film, this is half a film. And that sits very sorely with me. At nigh-on 3 hours it’s a long half film, for sure. But they knew there would be PotC3, we all knew it. But I wanted 3 stories. Not Pirates of The Caribbean, and Pirates of The Caribbean 2, part 1.

Don’t get me wrong. The story does not suffer from it. But it kicks you in the teeth like Star Wars Episode II, knowing that you’re waiting 2-3 years now to finish what’s just been started. I don’t like that in a film. It doesn’t have an ending, it has a cliffhanger. Fine if you’re completing that on next week’s show, not if you haven’t even finished filming next years blockbuster yet.

Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightly in POTC2Overall a fantastic film, that I’m not going to reccommend to you, as you’ve already decided to see it. There’s no need. I would suggest watching the first one if you’re not already quite familiar with it, as Disney have created a fantasy world and they drop you right back in it as if you lived there.

On a personal level, I think they have done worlds of justice to this franchise that could easily have sold out. The first brought back all my Memories of Monkey Island and this second one has persuaded me to dig out the games and do them all again. In a world where the big blockbuster films are competing on CG and big name actors PotC has come along and pushed it’s excellent story, writing and visuals. It wins the competition becasue it’s not trying, it’s just being a fantastic film, a fantastic world and a fantastic story, nothing’s superfluous – it’s there only becasue it’s needed in the story. The dramatic bits are worked up to well in the script. The jaw-dropping epicness is there to peak the story, not to grab headlines and ‘push CGI effects’

Roll on the third film. Lets hope no one dies, replacing actors halfway through a split film just looks wrong. Now if it was a new story…
