Done and Dusted…

Again, it’s approaching that time of year where I get a new boss and the Student Magazine starts all over again for a new year. I’m brainstorming ideas to try and keep it fresh and new, but not make it too complex, as I’m still going to have under a week to design up each 64 page edition on my own.
Who actually reads it though? It’s something I ask myself quite a lot. I mean, the best ’selling’ issue (it’s free) has been the one with a picture of the Cheerleaders naked on the cover. But I feel that may not have been the most ‘read’ one…
The MayBall edition left the shelves quickly as did the Snow(grad)Ball edition. But these had specific information that students are looking for. Editions with just the usual articles in seem to get lost in the flow. With just the odd article brought up on the forums. Usually about sex, or some form of gender discrimination/sexism.
Now, I know that the design isn’t going to make students read the magazine. And the cover images aren’t really my choice so I can’t even drag people in through that, but I feel I need to somehow make it more accessible. The font’s corporate, so fixed. And the size/shape is fixed due to the budget. So it seems I’m going to spend the next few weeks creating the mother of all grid layouts so I can have interest and flexibility.
At least the new boss seems to like the old designs and doesn’t want to cram text in. Lets see how it all goes?

I always read Dusted when I have lunch up at the uni, and I think they will make good memorabilia of my times at uni some years down the line.

In other news, its confirmed that we are having another calendar this year, so keep an eye out for that and spread the word.
