Rocking and a Rollin’ Part II

Sorry I missed this weekend, but imagine this post a day earlier.
Well, I did the fun stuff that is bolting things to my car. On Saturday, bright and early, I went over to my mates house and we proceeded to reverse my car up onto ramps on his (gravel) driveway. After initial heart-stopping incidents with the lack of grip the ramps had and the fact my car seemed to just push them rather than drive up them we finally had the rear wheels a foot higher than the ground.
After my initial hesitation of wanting to be under a car supported by thin looking metal on the very study surface that is loose gravel, it soon became bearable – and a nice shelter from the downpour halfway through.
Cars look very different underneath.
In short I bolted the ARB to the suspension struts and then clamped the bushes and bar to the rear suspension, tighened everything up and drove off the ramps with that warming glow of achievement from doing the ‘manly mechanic’ thing, regardless of how easy it turned out to be.
Then a quick test-drive. Big grin. I like it. And at an extra £14.22 to the insurance, it’s not breaking the bank!
Big thanks to John for the use of his Drive, his dads ramps and for the Sausage rolls! And also for his enthusiastic comments through the test drive, I’ll be sure to get the recorder going when I have tested the bar well enough to take him on test drive part 2
I feel meachanically upgraded. No longer inept. Here’s to the next DIY mod!

how’s the training coming along?

Not too bad. It’s an arse that some sessions have to be cancelled over the Uni holidays because the building closes.
Missed 2 sessions because of easter. But starts up again Tuesday, so should be good.
Hopefully something will happen with it soon to report back on, but it’s just training as usual at the moment. Might see what comps are coming up to go watch, it’s summer soon, there must be a few.

Excuse my ignorance, but what is an ARB and what doth it do ?!

It’s an Anti Roll Bar; it connects the two sides of the rear suspension and stiffens the back of the car, stopping/reducing roll when cornering. Thus increasing the speed you can carry through corners.
The stiffer the bar, the harder it is for the rear suspension to twist. This bar is 23mm, so rather thick. It’s most awesome.

Just wondering, how close are you to Leeds?

Not too far, think it’s around an hour and a half driving. What’s in Leeds?

Leeds organises a number of tournaments a year, 4 I think, 2 Taekwondo (ITF) and 2 kickboxing but any style can take part. The Taekwondo tournaments, I think for one of them you have to be a student, but the kickboxing one seems to be open to anyone. Maybe you could get some interest going at your club.
Warwick also organises ITF tournaments, i think twice a year. But I’m sure you’ll have to be a student to take part, or at least own a lifetime membership to NUS.
